As so many times before I had strode up to the brow of the next hill, only to find the realm beyond it as much of a barren, windswept wasteland as the last. Had I been abandoned by fate? Why me of all people? I felt cold, but it was neither a cold of the body nor of the heart. There was a blizzard in my soul.
I sat down on a fallen log, gazing into the very last object in the world that could fill me with warmth. The now setting sun had always been smiling my way, even though destiny had not. I would gladly give up a part of my sanity for that to reverse for but a day!
